Strengthening Community Safety through Collaborative Changes in Union City

Dear Union City Community,

As the Director of Public Safety, it is my privilege to inform you about the recent collaborative changes within the Union City Ohio and Indiana Police Departments. These changes are driven by our commitment to enhancing the safety and welfare of our community, all while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

After careful legal review, we are pleased to announce that contracts are now in place, enabling all Indiana police officers to exercise arrest powers and authority in the state of Ohio, in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code. Similarly, all Ohio officers have been sworn in as reserve police officers for the Union City Indiana Police Department, granting them full arrest powers within the state of Indiana. These measures aim to empower our officers to conduct their duties seamlessly on both sides of the state line, ultimately contributing to the improved safety of our community.

One noticeable change is the uniformity among our officers. The department has chosen a uniform that reflects our unity and collaborative spirit. Additionally, our patrol vehicles have been rebranded to symbolize our commitment to working together seamlessly. This visual unity extends to our command structure, ensuring day-to-day operations are more fluid and coordinated.

In a strategic move, the Union City Ohio Police Department has relocated to the Union City Indiana Police Department, now situated at 219 S. Howard Street, Union City, Indiana. This relocation not only facilitates cost-sharing but also places our officers in a centralized location. This proximity enhances collaboration, enabling our officers to work closely on cases and strengthen community relations.

Our officers are fully committed to serving Union City as one united community. We encourage you to visit our police department, to meet with me directly or any of our dedicated officers if you have questions or concerns. Your engagement is crucial in building a safer and stronger Union City.

We appreciate your continued support as we work tirelessly to improve the capabilities of our officers and create a safer environment for everyone. Together, we can make Union City a beacon of safety, collaboration, and community strength.

Stay safe and vigilant.

Sincerely,

Mark Ater
Director of Public Safety
Union City Ohio and Indiana Police Departments
