A Celebration of Unity and Equality in Union City

I want to take this opportunity to discuss an important day in American history and share how our department stands united in support of everyone, regardless of their race. With Juneteenth just around the corner, it is vital that we recognize and honor the significance of this date, as well as reaffirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable community.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th each year, marks the commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. This momentous occasion originated in Galveston, Texas, when Union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, arrived to enforce the emancipation of all enslaved individuals. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two and a half years prior, many African Americans in Texas were unaware of their freedom until that historic day in 1865.

Juneteenth symbolizes the resilience, courage, and hope of the African American community, serving as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced throughout history. It is a time to reflect on the injustices endured, pay tribute to the achievements and contributions of African Americans, and work towards a future free from discrimination and prejudice.

As an integral part of the Union City community, the Police Department recognizes the significance of Juneteenth and reiterates our unwavering support for everyone, irrespective of their race. We stand committed to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and equality in our interactions with all individuals.

Our department embraces diversity as a strength, valuing the unique perspectives and experiences that each person brings to our community. We strive to build trust and mutual respect among residents, fostering an environment where everyone feels safe, protected, and valued.

Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder that progress is made through unity and collective effort. As we celebrate this important day, let us stand together as a community, rejecting racism and discrimination in all its forms. By fostering understanding, embracing diversity, and promoting equality, we can create a future that uplifts and empowers every individual in Union City.

On behalf of the Union City Police Department, I extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone celebrating Juneteenth. Let us embrace this day as an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, celebrate the accomplishments of the African American community, and rededicate ourselves to building a more inclusive and just society.

Remember, unity knows no bounds, and together we can overcome any challenges that lie ahead. The Union City Police Department is committed to being a steadfast ally, working alongside our community to ensure a safe, equitable, and harmonious environment for all.

Stay united, stay strong, and have a joyous Juneteenth!

Chief Mark Ater Jr.
